Boteco 4Linux: KyaPanel

It’s curious how the chaos theory works in my world. Everything keeps happening in a way that only coincidences happens! It’s an unexpected meeting here, a lock there… And what happened in the pat two weeks was no different.

For many years I was following (even from far) the development of the former “JeguePanel”, a servers manager for e-mail (Postfix) and network sharing (Samba) created by Anahuac de Paula Gil, a friend. Some time later, I voted for the project’s name chage to KyaPanel (which in my opinion, is a much more professional name… A name for the “market”). Recently, with the redesign of my site, I decided to download KyaPanel to do a review and some tutorials about the software, which is something that I wanted to do for some time, but I didn’t have much motivation (in this, the site’s redesign helped a lot).

http://www.kyapanel.com

And then comes the coincidence… In the same week that I had this idea, I received an e-mail from 4Linux inviting me to participate on a lecture about KyaPanel! And with exactly Anahuac talking about the product. The event is the Boteco 4Linux (Boteco is an informal word for Bar here in Brazil), and in my opinion was a very good idea to unite interested people about some subject to learn something more.

About the presentation

I always thought Anahuac as a great speaker, with a relaxed and good tone that makes his presentations always good. This time was no different, it was great, and better as we had some beer available in the process (both at my side and the speaker’s side).

As I like short reports, what I learned in the presentation was the following:

  • KyaPanel isn’t with KI, it’s with KY, as it’s better.
  • I didn’t see much about Samba administration, but to tell the truth I wasn’t interested in it.
  • I found out a very powerful tool for managing e-mails, which can work with the main data bases (LDAP, MySQL, PostgreSQL), can do controls and restrictions by domain and by specific user (by user is very good) by powerful filters, integrates with other groupwares (eGroupWare, Zimbra), and so on.
  • It has a non-intrusive configuration methodology: the tool instead of changing the configuration files on-the-fly, it suggest to the administrator to do it. I really liked that, this way I keep track of exactly what the tool is doing without having to look at the code, and I can create a more concise documentation about the implementation process.

Anahuac did some demonstrations, showing how to create and edit users, some filters, restrictions and the integration with the Zimbra suite. I also agreed when he said that Zimbra and Tomcat (aka “Gato Antônio”) are very resource-expensive. Sadly the market likes so much this language!

The official report about the Boteco 4Linux can be seen on this URL:
http://www.4linux.com.br/noticias/2008/confira-como-foi-boteco-4linux-kyapanel.html

By the way, I was happy to see that so many people still remembers me. I hope that my work continues, as Anahuac’s work continues and grows to a much more degree of success. And speaking of that, I was very happy to know that after so much effort, Anahuac is now “enjoying” the results of the great tool that he develops. And I still think that this only tends to growing ;)

MegaDriver: MetalHog

I received an e-mail from my friend Danilo Passos (aka |N|NjA|) telling me about the brand new album from the MegaDriver band. For those who don’t know, MegaDriver was created by only one person who began creating metal versions for 16-bit game musics, and at the beginning he did it all by himself. It made much success only distributing his music versions on the Internet. Today the band has three more members and they actually play live at Anime and Game events.

My first contact with the band was when I heard the music Rise From Your Grave, a Metal version of the game Altered Beast’s first stage.

POWER UP!

http://www.megadriver.com.br

When I saw the news, I took exactly three seconds to enter the site and download the new album from them: MetalHog. The whole MetalHog album has Metal versions of Sonic Music: Sonic 1, 2, 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and so on. The album is available to download for free in the MP3 format.

In my opinion, the new album is great. Now that the band has more members, I believe that it made it better to work on the musics, not considering the previous experience. They made very good versions of the main musics from the series. Particularly, I liked the last music, MetalHog, which is when Sonic fights Robotinik! Exciting! It’s also cool to note some chorus simulations made with the keyboards in the middle of the music. Overral: the album is great.

Tracklist:

01 – Intro (Sonic 1)
02 – Greenhill (Sonic 1)
03 – Emerald Hill (Sonic 2)
04 – Chemical Plant (Sonic 2)
05 – Marble Zone (Sonic 1)
06 – Flying Battery Metal (Sonic And Knuckles)
07 – Casino Night (Sonic 2)
08 – Startlight (Sonic 1)
09 – Scrap Brain (Sonic 1 SMS)
10 – Scrap Brain (Sonic 1)
11 – Metalpolis (Sonic 2)
12 – Ice Cap (Sonic 3)
13 – Live And Learn (Sonic Adventure)
14 – MetalHog (Sonic 1 And 2)

HTML + CSS + Hot Chick

Some time ago I was killing time viewing a famous anonymous image board, when I saw an extremely interesting image. At the moment I didn’t think twice: I saved the image on my machine and then showed to some friends.

When I was going to post on fotolog, I realized that something was missing. Maybe the hot chick’s t-shirt was implementing only one part of all available HTML! Then, in my incredible lack of things to do, I decided to create a HTML + CSS code for her:

<html>
  <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="woman/blonde"/>
    <hair style="color: blonde; size: long"></hair>
    <eyes style="color: black;"></eyes>
  <nose></nose>
  <mouth style="lipstick-color: #572023">:)</mouth>
  </head>
  <neck><colar></colar></neck>
  <body style="size: medium; vertical-size: thin">
    <arms><hands></hands></arms>
    <tshirt style="type: nerd hot chick">
      <tits style="size: medium; touchable: very"></tits>
    </tshirt>
    <jeans style="color: blue">
      <ass style="shape: round; feel: soft"></ass>
      <vagina style="haircut: v-style; size="medium"></vagina>
      <legs></legs>
    </jeans>
  </body>
  <feet>
    <footnote>Nérd Chicks - Beneath the clothes and glasses there is a sexy goddess.</footnote>
  </feet>
</html>

With little modifications to the CSS style, it’s possible to create many variations of the woman, for all kinds of likings. This shows how CSS is powerful, when we follow the standards. I didn’t use an external stylesheet (the correct way) because the code had to be small to get into a paper sheet with the photo.

I printed two pages: one I put on my bedroom’s wall, and the other I gave as a present to my Web professor at the university.

Devin: a new all, but will it change?

More Work!?I took the courage and finally made it. I wanted to change my site, migrate everything to some CMS, but I had to get much courage to do it… I used to do all things manually, within the HTML and PHP pure code, even after PHP became popular and popped all these great CMS’ which we have around, and that facilitates our webmaster’ lives.

It was very hard to do the choice, but I opted for Wordpress, with Joomla! on a not distant second place. After that I began to play around with Wordpress and I got really impressed with the many features that it has, but to transform it in a complete CMS is a really hard work and it needs a little of experience on HTML and PHP.

To tell the truth, it took more time to adapt the page’s HTML and style than migrating all the data from the old site to the new. The comments and the guestbook are all easily there. It was some work to convert the articles, but after some time it worked very well. I’m still customizing this site’s layout to a better presentation of content for all the readers.

I ask all of you that see this, please give some opinions about things I must change! Suggestions about doing better things here. Leave a comment and I’ll be glad to read it!

Yahoo! Eclipse: False but creative

Yesterday I was talking with a friend from my university, when suddenly he did the question:

- Did you see the  Yahoo Eclipse?
- Hummmm… no… – I began thinking about Eclipse, the development software, but in a few seconds I dropped the idea – What is it?
- This saturday, Yahoo will make a Lunar Eclipse on Earth that could be seen from Brazil.
- What?! They will make an artificial lunar eclipse?
- That’s it.

I went to Google and began searching about the subject. I found Yahoo!’s site speaking about that, and I really say that they were saying that Yahoo! Brasil, together with a company called Celestial Marketing, will move the whole world to create a Lunar Eclipse that could be seen from Brazil. I was still thinking: “What is this shit? You can’t simply doing that, what the hell are they talking about?”

In little time I began to discover that it was false, searching about the subject and reading more about the event which will occour this saturday. I confess that after I found out about this, I though that those marketing people were very smart.

Yes, this saturday, August 16, 2008, a lunar eclipse will occour and it can be seen from Brazil. What Yahoo! Brasil hidden in their campaign is that the lunar eclipse is natural and not artificial as many people are thinking that it is. You can confirm that going to this NASA’s page. Many people that are desinformed, and who does not interpret the situation well, really think that Yahoo! Brasil will create a lunar eclipse.

Eclipse Lunar

That’s it: Yahoo! Brasil wants to remodel their brand in Brazil to compete heavily with Google and other brands. Part of this effort is to reforce the idea of a solid coporation, one of the reasons are that in the last months, Microsoft is trying to buy the company. To do this remodel, the guys at Yahoo! Brasil are changing their site to a new, purple model (“Don’t subestimate the purple!, as the slogan says), which they are working for a couple of weeks, and they’ll do the transition exactly at the time of the lunar eclipse.

In other words, they are claiming the eclipse to them, to serve as a bridge to the site’s whole change: people will see and enjoy the eclipse, and after that they’ll go to the site and see all the transformations and many new resources.

Move the world would be inspire people to watch the eclipse, which was going to happen anyway. It was a great idea from the marketing people to promove the brand. I just think that people that does not get the situation are plain stupid thinking that the company will really create an artificial lunar eclipse :P

Attention Problems?

It’s interesting how the subjects of a conversation take such different paths over the short time of a discussion. Last night, when I went to the living room to try a Playstation 2 game (Dragon Ball :), I ended (and I don’t know how) having a conversation about the most diverse topics, with a friend of mine, Fábio, who is here living with us for some time.

Fortunately the topic of discussion was not football, not politics, neither religion. It started with small discussions about the behaviour of individuals according to their musical tastes, it evolved to drugs and their influences in groups of people (taking to the point including the neurological classification of its various types, in addition to the influence of their banality and illegality), then to how our brain and mind works, and the fact that they are really one; and following that we started putting differences between how our brain works and some analogies with how computers works.

I will not even begin saying how in this point we began talking about binary codes, alternating current, representation of numbers and how memory devices operate in both computers and in our neurons.

After so many interesting topics, a question that was bugging me for some time appeared: why the hell I couldn’t concentrate on certain things like before? Why my memory is so weak nowadays, even when I’m still so young? Then Fábio told me that he had the same kind of problem and that it was quite typical on people who grew up on the Internet.

But what it means? In my case, I can identify two very specific symptoms:

  1. Lack of concentration to do only one thing. You can’t study or read something without always looking at something or thinking about other things too. In the past it was so easy to write so much things without any concern about everything else besides writing. But over time this changed and now the delay to write something is much greater. Maybe this explains why sometimes I think my productivity is a waste and because that I begin feeling useless.
  2. The memory simply does not work very well. Maybe not because of the concentration, but because the majority of things in life becomes as “non-special” as it should be that the memory simply discards and leaves it hidden deep in the mind. For example, I just read the “trilogy of four books” of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”, but I know that within an year, I’ll completely forget about those books. The only advantage of this is that if I read them again, it will delight me as if I were reading for the first time.

I believe that many people have these sumptoms, specially those, like myself, that grew up with the Internet and simply can not stop using it. Some scholars call this kind of behaviour Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), but I prefer to say that this is only an habit which people like me developed throughout their lifes. Perhaps this habit, for some reason, has become so unbearable that the person wants to change it and evolve his life in some way.

The first thing that we must do is to identify what are the causes of the problems that we want to eliminate. It’s the same as our computers get broken or defective: before fixing it you obviously have to find out in the middle of all those softwares and hardwares what is the problem and then attack this problem. It’s certain that most times people just use the incredible method of “try and error”, but this never works as intended. Well, I’ll try to find what are the causes for the main two problems described above:

  1. Ah, computers. Computers have multi-tasking capabilities, we are multi-tasking too, but much more than they. The computers can have 2 or 4 processors, or even many processors in a Grid, but the human mind can process information in parallel much more like noone can. And no, these informations are not as exactly as the informations that a computer generates (because it does not work in the zero’s and one’s format), but this does not turn our brains less powerful. In the same time that I’m writing a text like this, I’m listening to music, I can tell that my friend Rafael is in the living room playing Resident Evil 4, and that two friends of mine are talking with me in MSN. Oh, in my browser I have Gmail open with some e-mails coming and some searchs on Google about various things including the name of the bastard vocalist of a brazilian band called Jota Quest (which a lady friend of mine really hates with all her forces, according to her) and the term “Attention Deficit Disorder”. Did you feel the drama? How someone can concentrate on something specific with all those things happening at once?Those windows flashing, Linux terminals always acessible with the keys alt+space (kudos to yakuake), e-mails coming… How can I possibly cncentrate on writing a text if I have to divide de load (in parallel) with all those stuff? Reading something and concentrate on the reading? Impossible. In a technical text, for example, you open the tutorial and goes doing many things at the same time as you read it.
  2. Fábio concluded in a very concise form the cause of this, based on something that he saw and I don’t rememeber (LOL) on a text of someone that I don’t remember too. The things that I remember is that it talked about “cybernetic implants”, and the theme can be defined in the following form: “the Internet, with its infinite memory and with its incredible easy access to the information, gave an extension to the mind, an extension that you can always query your external memory with a tool like Google for example; with the search done and the results in hand, you use the information and discards easily thereafter, without knowing it much, because obviously you know that the information is still on the Internet (your external memory) and you can get it in any time again. Kudos to Google and Wikipedia.As the TV and its images turned up as a new “sense” of information’s input to people, the Internet turned up as new extension to the memory. Flood of information! As we do not know how to use our brain in the right way, we can not support this “everything” and then we discard a good part of what could be interesting to us. This explains why when I was young, my memory for Linux things was so much better. Maybe because I didn’t have so much information on the Internet, neither those efficient search engines that facilitates the access to this information, I used to do the things well done. When a problem appears, I used to fight a lot the problem, alone or asking help on mailing lists. Nowadays, when a problem appear, I copy and paste into Google and I get the answer in 27.3 seconds. Practical, but in the long-term, it spoils us.

After the problems are identified, here comes the most hard part: solve them! Well, this part I still didn’t discover very well, because, errrrr, I still didn’t solve the problem for myself :P Again, I’ll try to list some of the key points for each of the symptoms previously discussed in this text.

  1. Stop using computers. NO! It can’t be, my social and professional life depends on it very much. But I believe that the main thing to do for easing the problem is to regulate using. Ah, this is also very hard. How about using computers less? Maybe it can be done. I believe this is the best way to solve the problem. Instead of working all day in front of computer doing many things at the same time without stopping, and when you go home, turn on the computer and spend all night doing the same thing that is staying in front of a computer, how about you simply go do something else? In preference, find someone and keep talking about things until you explode. Or better yet, find a woman/man (depends on your sexuality) and keep talking about exciting things until you explode. Doing this you get help socially and for the problem.Ah, and other nice thing: read before sleeping. Read anything. Lay yourself in the bad and keep reading until you get very sleepy. Mark the page and continue reading the other day. This part, for me, is very hard: when I begin to read I don’t want to stop until I finish it (in truth this is another one of my problems that does not correspond to this text), as in the time when I began reading Berserk at 8pm and finished it one billion of volumes later at the sunrise.

    Will you do something more specific, like writing a text or studying? Turn off temporarily the MSN or any instant messaging program. I’m not saying that you must stop using it forever, just turn off and turn on later after you finished what you are doing. And do not only put the Away status because nobody respects the status, even you. Turn off and go work on your task. In the beginning you’ll feel the necessity of clicking at the window to see if there’s someone interesting and/or important, or will keep trying to see if there’s someone talking to you every time. But after a while you get off this feelings and get used to the virtual silence.

  2. Write. Write. Write. As an experienced instructor, I know very well what this means. When I say write, write to others. For example, I’m writing this text not only for me, but for you that is reading. Writing to others helps fixing the idea on your mind and you always search for other forms of communication on the subject, because the others will understand you better. The result of that is, as every teacher says, you learn much more yourself with this behaviour.And when you write to others, this means that you are sharing knowledge. And it’s certain that this knowledge of yourself will be admired by someone, and it does not matter the subject itself.  You can bet that if you write about how ants farts, even as it seems absurd (or not), someone will be interested in your text. If you can’t get out of the internet and its flood of information, use it for your own good! RÁR-RÁR!

    Ah, and when you forget something, go read what you wrote. Nobody to understand better what you wrote than yourself. And talking about writing, Carlos Castañeda in one of his books tells a very interesting method to improve the memory and even to get yourself out of some mind’s root that your brain has. The method consists on beginning to, at least one or two hours a day, sit dwn and write in a notebook or something the name of all people you met in your life, beginning on the most recent facts to the former ones. Think constantly and try to always write the names of those people in the paper. After that begin writing the happenings (even the “unuseful” ones) about those people. At the end, begin associating each person with another in your life. With this you’ll be training your brain to do better memory associations and basically helping how you remember things. This also has other effects, but it does not have anything to this text’s subject, so if you are interested, go read Castañeda’s books.

I believe that these are some of the most “easy” forms to correct this type of habit. Of course there are many forms much more radicals, like the Steve Jobs style: “go to India and search for personal illumination”. I believe that this kind of thing isn’t necessary, so instead of going to India searching for divine illumination, I’ll get some money and buy a Harley Davidson, searching for divine illumation riding at the road.

Maybe the only radical form of breaking the habits that I’m interested is the break of the person’s reality itself, to reconstruct another ego and a new perception of things, acquiring completely new habits. This is based on the premise of the phrase: “Nothing better than a great trauma for you to realize about something and change”. An example of this would be my ex-girlfriend, but you know, maybe this story can be told another time.

Meanwhile, good luck to all of us!

LPIC-I Certification: Completed!

Yesterday I received the results of my LPIC-I exam and I passed it! :) Finally, after so many years not doing because I was lazy… Now in September I’ll try the LPIC-2 certification exams!

Actually, the exam was not so easy as I though. There was some questions that requires you to memorize many things. It’s the kind of exam that I really don’t like, the exam that does not show the real world for the taker. However, the questions were very concise and well balanced, and as I was talking with a guy sometime ago, the exam shows that the candidate shows interest in something, and that’s the important thing. Maybe If I study more to the next exam, I’ll do the “what is the file or command that does this very specific and exclusive thing that you’ll never use in your whole life as a Linux administrator” questions right :P

LPI’s Exams: 101 and 102

After three years “escaping” my willing to do the LPI exams, I decided to subscribe in the exam’s week and do it. The results: yesterday, after sleeping 2 hours-only, I went to do both the 101 and 102 exams at morning. The exams were not so hard to me (and in my opinion), but there was some questions that really were hard to answer! Some things that I didn’t use in my 13-year Linux experience. But that’s the life, getting 100% right at these exams was not my objective.

Strangely, the 102 exam was easier than 101, I don’t know why but it was.

If I pass on these (I think the results will be posted 15 days from now), I’m willing to do the 201 and 202 exams in September. Wish me luck :)

And really, I have to remember to check and update my RHCE certification…

RHCE Exam Tomorrow

Yeah, I’m really nervous about this exam tomorrow. Everybody says that it’s a damn difficult exam, and some of my friends that already did it are saying that I can pass it. The Pre-Assesments tests at the RH site says that I can do it, the simulations across the net says it too. But I’m still too nervous :-( I have good knowledge on the Red Hat distro, I had worked with it for years now (since RH 7.3), have good knowledge on general Linux (10 years using it)… and I’m still nervous. Ack! I hate exams.

Wish me good luck. Next week I’ll have the result :-)
